Woven but k/not One” (working title) is researching synchronization and asynchronization through the practice of weaving. Text(ile)s are ancient vehicles for messages, symbols, and affiliations that can represent a “people” or “nation.” Weaving, as a practice, similarly unifies weavers through synchronization: a cognitive process of syncing one’s body rhythms with the rhythms of other people, objects, or environments. The connection that comes through synchronization can cultivate deeper communication and intimacy but can also promote conformity and reduce individual critical thinking. In response to my time in Israel, I wanted to resist the unification of Jewish people under a single culture and find ways to emphasize the specificities that come from a history of diaspora. Developed through the research of the Cognitive Neuroscience Landau Lab at the Hebrew University, the material and intellectual resources at the Bloomfield Science Museum, the technical and choreographic vision of Gry Tingskog, and the sonic imagination and talent of Maya Pennington, this work aims to find strategies for syncing without losing one’s own rhythm.
In the work-in-progress performance, a group of 5 performers weave on a conductive loom which amplifies the rhythm of their weaving. With composer and musician Maya Pennington, they engage in practices of syncing and unsyncing through layered song and movement. After the practices, the collective-- including a researcher from the Neuroscience Landau Lab-- was invited to interpret the experience.
